    Zakat al-fitr

Zakat al-fitr is one sa' of the local staple food (wheat, barley, dates, rice…) per person; the Hanafis also allow paying its value. Ask your mosque or local scholar for the exact sa' and the money amount this year — we do not state a figure of our own. [Bukhari 1503]

The rules of zakat and their sources

    Who pays?

Zakat is a pillar of Islam, due from a free, sane Muslim who owns the nisab.

    Qur'an 2:43, 9:103; Bukhari 8

    Nisab

The gold nisab is 20 mithqal = 85 g of pure (24k) gold; the silver nisab is 200 dirham = 595 g of silver. For cash, scholars differ: many use the silver nisab (safer for the poor), some the gold one. The switch above shows both.

Bukhari 1405 and Muslim 979 (silver); Abu Dawud 1573 (gold)

    Rate: 2.5%

Zakat on gold, silver, money and trade goods is a quarter of a tenth — one fortieth, 2.5%.

    Bukhari 1454

    A full year (hawl)

Zakat on money and gold falls due once the wealth has reached the nisab and a full lunar year has passed.

Abu Dawud 1573; Ibn Majah 1792

    Cash, bank balances, foreign currency

Paper currency has the ruling of gold and silver and zakat is due on it; foreign currency is valued at today's rate.

Islamic Fiqh Academy (OIC), 1986 resolution on paper currency

    Trade goods

Goods held for sale are valued at market price at the year's end and carry 2.5%; the four schools agree.

    Ibn Qudama, al-Mughni, Kitab al-Zakat

    Jewellery

The Hanafis hold that women's gold and silver jewellery is zakatable (the hadith of the two bracelets). The Shafi'is, Malikis and Hanbalis say permissible jewellery for personal use is exempt. Savings, bars and coins are zakatable in every school.

    Abu Dawud 1563; Tirmidhi 637; Malik, al-Muwatta, Kitab al-Zakat; Ibn Qudama, al-Mughni

    Debts

A debt due now is deducted from the zakatable wealth in the Hanafi and Hanbali schools and in most contemporary fatwas; the later Shafi'i position does not deduct it (untick the box to follow it). A reliable receivable counts; a doubtful one only once received.

    Ibn Qudama, al-Mughni; al-Nawawi, al-Majmu', Kitab al-Zakat

    Who receives it

Zakat goes to eight groups: the poor, the needy, those who collect it, those whose hearts are to be reconciled, freeing captives, debtors, in God's way and the traveller.

    Qur'an 9:60

    Who cannot receive it

You may not give your zakat to your parents, grandparents and those above them, or to your children, grandchildren and those below them, because you are already obliged to support them; this is agreed by consensus. A husband may not give his zakat to his wife. A wife may give hers to a husband in need according to the majority, but not according to Abu Hanifa. Zakat is also not given to the wealthy or to non-Muslims.

    Ibn al-Mundhir, al-Ijma; Ibn Qudamah, al-Mughni, Book of Zakat; Sahih al-Bukhari 1466

    Nisab today: 85 g of 24k gold ≈ 2,991,994,138 toman; 595 g of silver ≈ 280,868,848 toman. Zakat is 2.5% — 2.5 million toman on every 100 million toman of zakatable wealth.
